review 1: 4.5 stars. This book is random and almost ridiculous but the tone and overall feel of the book really makes it work. The themes of disconnectedness and self-centeredness help make the ridiculousness really work, too, because the characters aren't really seeing things in a "normal" way, but through their very skewed personal lens. Basically, these folks are all sorts of messed up and we get to read all about the train wreck.Anyway, really random and odd book that I greatly enjoyed reading. I'm going to have to check out more Murakami.
review 2: None of the characters were attractive, although the Oba-sans developed into more interesting characters. The 6 loser 20 year old boys were probably an example of the Asian 'Stand Alone Syndrome', a personality disorder t
... morehat is unique to Asians (I was thinking it might be close to autism), and one of them randomly murders one of the Oba-sans. These women are in their late 30s and the only reasons they meet together is their last name is the same, and none of them are married any longer. They lead a lonely, unadventurous life, going to work, unable to develop deep relationships. It's like the author is exploring what lonely people do at the height of their sexual prowess, but with no ability to connect with other people. I'm not sure it worked, but it was well written. less
