review 1: What a strange, terrifying little book! Years after Aoyama's wife dies, at the prompting of his teenage son, he decides it's time to start dating again with the hopes of finding a relationship that leads to marriage. In his early 40s, he feels out of tune with the current dating scene and thinks it would be great if he could somehow simplify the whole process. With the aid of a close friend, the idea of holding an audition is born.Aoyama's friend is able to put together an audition for a movie that calls for the next big, undiscovered actress. Aoyama goes along with it, mostly because he's able to reason that he's not really deceiving the women who apply since he and his friend have thrown together plans to actually make a real movie (knowing it may never get off the gro... moreund). Aoyama has certain qualifications about what he's looking for, so they're able to weed through the applications and narrow the field down. Through this process, Aoyama becomes enchanted by a young woman named Yamasaki Asami; something about her application differentiates her for everyone else, and when he finally meets her in person, he can't help but almost immediately fall for her.Despite warnings from his friends about something seeming off about the girl, Aoyama continues romancing her, taking it very slow. Quite a few strange things happen along the way, but Aoyama is too distracted by his strong feelings to really question Asami in any rational way. As they get more involved, the story heads down a much darker path - by the time Aoyama discovers the secrets Asami hides, it might be too late. The ending of this book is graphic, intense, and shockingly horrific. I look forward to checking out the author's other work that's been translated to English. The more Japanese fiction I read, the more I love it!
review 2: Do you like stories that are 150 pages of weird/sexist love story, 20 pages of random happenings, and 20 pages of brutal yet slightly wacky violence? Do you enjoy characters whose motivations don't really make any sense? How about books where dog's named "Gangsta" make you wonder about what kind of liberties this translator was taking? If you answered YES to one or all of these questions, then, my friend, this is the book for you. less
