review 1: I'm not sure whether to blame the original author or his translator for the mess this book's turned out to be. Ultimately, I'm sure it's a mix of the two. Where the author is definitely concerned, the book's ending is weak and poorly-paced, the characters are all flat (It's as though Murakami heard the adage "show, don't tell" in reverse - I found myself picturing cardboard cutouts with characteristics scrawled on their backs in place of real people), and the ham-fisted attempts at foreshadowing and suspense-building are laughably obvious.I'm willing to place blame tentatively on the translator for other issues: the simplistic, uninteresting (though granted, readable) prose; the horrifically bad descriptions of sex ("lolling," "sluicing," and "oozing" are three of the leas... moret erotic verbs I've ever read); and the sudden narrative shift from restricted third person (Aoyama) to apparent third person omniscient and then back again, in order to conveniently clarify Asami's motivation, to name a few. I wouldn't call this novel terrible, but it's by no means a masterpiece, and I won't be recommending it to any of my friends. Even cult horror fans are better off preserving their memories of the far superior film version.
review 2: जापानी लेखक Ryu murakami द्वारा लिखित एक छोटा फिर भी शानदार थ्रिलर उपन्यास... कहानी कुछ इस प्रकार है.. Aayoma एक डाक्युमेंट्री फिल्म निर्माता, जो अपनी पत्नी की मौत के बाद से 7 वर्षों से मृत्यु शोक से पूरी तरह उबरा नहीं है, और अभी तक किसी और स्त्री से संबंध में नहीं है.. मगर जब उसका बेटा भी उसको शादी करने के लिए कहता है तो फिर वह भी अनमने ढंग से तैयार हो जाता है.. अपने लिए एक योग्य पत्नी की तलाश करने के लिए वह अपने दोस्त Yoshikawa की सलाह और मदद से एक फिल्म का नकली ऑडिशन प्लान करता है.. वहाँ वह yamasaki asami से मिलता है और उसपर पूरी तरह मुग्ध हो जाता है इतना मुग्ध की वह उसके बारे में गहरी छान बीन नहीं करता और उन सब संकेतो को नजरअंदाज कर देता है जो यह जाहिर करते कि उसके बारे में जानने के लिए कुछ ओर भी है.. कहानी में जापानी संस्कृति का वर्णनात्मक चित्रण है.. और पात्रों को रहस्यमय ढंग से उभारा गया है.. कहानी मेँ सामान्य सायको थ्रिलर की तरह बहुत से ट्विस्ट और टर्न नही हैं, मगर इस कमी के बावजूद यह पढने में एक रोमांचक किताब है.. less
