review 1: Started out really well, thought I was going to enjoy it, but it just got boring and tedious. Needed some good editing (and maybe less annoying characters). I did rejoice when she finally admitted on the second to last page that Raph might be a special needs child! Good lord woman, for someone supposedly intelligent whose specialty is the study of children, not noticing that your child is completely up there on the Autism spectrum is a bit hard to believe.
review 2: Loved this book. Sarah Moss treads a fine line in her portrayal of the desperation of a woman in career freefall and the comedic moments of raising children on a remote Scottish island. The protagonist has the patience of a saint in dealing with her children: a precocious 7-year old and a heart-melt
... moreing toddler. The 'mystery' element of the tale - the discovery of a baby's body in an unmarked grave - is interwoven with an historical account of the island under 19th century English ownership, but both threads of the tale are seemingly peripheral to the unfolding family dynamics. A must-read for anyone who ever thought that bringing up children on a remote northern island would be a romantic idea... less

Well written, but themes are repetitive, maybe that was the point!
