review 1: This has to be one of the most frustrating books that I've read that I haven't DNF'd. The good things were great. The main characters voice was awesome and the world building was unique with a ton of depth. While normally that would be enough for me it really wasn't. Toby Daye has to be the worst detective in the world. She can't figure out what color the sky is some days. The bad guys have never been more obvious. And because Toby doesn't figure things out the plot goes nowhere for most of the book. While the people Toby was sent to save died around her she twiddled her thumbs. By the end it felt like she had failed. I have no idea why the author put us through that kind of torture for the resolution we got. I'm going to try the third one in the hopes that some of the cha... morerms of the first book reappear. Sadly, my hopes aren't that high.
review 2: Book 2 in the October Daye series. October, or Toby to anyone who wants to live, is a part fae changling. Originally she was trying to pass as human, with a husband and child and a job as a PI, but unfortunately she was turned into a goldfish and spent 14 years living in a pond just before the start of book 1. These things happen. She regained her shape, but her husband and daughter had given her up for dead, and she couldn't deal with explaining to them where she'd been, so she goes back to the job of being a knight in a fae court. An unusual take on urban fantasy. They're not particularly deep books, but they're well written, and good fun. Definitely not like anything else I've read, and I'm looking forward to book 3. less
