review 1: I am sorry to say I gave up on this book - something I rarely do. By page 93 I could not feel involved in any of the characters or the story line - neither Ruth or Alden, nor police Charlie and Simon. The abbreviation of Charlie's name irritated me, as I kept thinking it was a man. I turned to other reviews which vary widely from one to five star. But comments about the disturbing trauma experienced by Ruth (understated in what I had read so far) put me off continuing. I read a book for enjoyment, humour, information and emotional engagement - but not for horror, violence and nightmares. I do not usually choose crime/ mystery/thriller books and don't think they will ever be my favoured genre, despite the glowing reviews on the back cover of this "psychological thril... moreler".
review 2: l really enjoyed this book. I love the psychological slant to what is basically a murder mystery. It kept turning me on my head as to what was happening and who was the real victim and villan. Quite a dark story with all the characters victims in different ways. Even the detectives are flawed characters with their own dysfunctions in quite extreme ways. A complex mystery with the story unfolded by the author from the viewpoint of different key characters. Moody and a dark read it was a real page turner and the end did not disappoint! less

Sophie Hannah is a brilliant writer and insightful, compassionate human being. I am a fan for life.

Got a little crazy tracking all the characters by the end, but another good mystery by Hannah.
