review 1: Various mothers are claiming their babies died of SIDS, but Dr. Duffy disagrees. Especially when there are multiple SIDS cases in one family. A film director goes about trying to attack Dr. Duffy, in order to get the women free, and hopefully do a documentary on the cases. However, did these women murder their kids or was it SIDS? It was interesting in the beginning, but then the book dragged on.
review 2: I'm in two minds about this book; having just put it down. I read the last section of the book in a few hours because I was keen to find out the conclusion but I can't say the rest of the story gripped me. I think this was down to so many of the characters being unlikeable. In a story that revolves around the idea that guilt and innocence, and truth and l
... moreie are very closely linked, I can see why the author would choose this tactic with the characters, but it made it a challenging read for me because the 'logic' was so illogical. On almost every page there were several contradictions and misdirection. No doubt also a technique by the author to make the reader second guess everything. I found the main character, Fliss Benson, to be rather pathetic. Not only is she obsessed with a man that quite clearly does not care for her and treats her with indifference, she fumbles through life, work, friendship, research, and eventually love with blind faith that something will work out. This is juxtaposed perfectly with the immaculate planner with a 'test' for proving or disproving guilt. Granted, she works out who the culprit is in this modern murder mystery, but that did not help to endear her to me as she only seems intent on an outcome that will prove something to her crush, Laurie. Without giving too much away, the conclusion with Hugo made me laugh out loud because it was so ridiculous. That being said, I really enjoyed the majority of the minor characters for the intensity of their characteristics: coldness, arrogance, ignorance, loyalty, frailty, and innocence. All of which were not found in one character, but in several. This also posed problems for me though, as all the characters were so one dimensional that I began to find them tedious towards the end, especially the "I must be right" Simon, who was irritating from the halfway point when his intriguing sense of self importance became pigheadedness. I was even more annoyed when the things he had been saying started to add up. Overall, I did really like the book for giving me such passionate distaste for the characters because I'm a firm believer that a book should have that kind of impact even if it it a negative one. The story was well worth telling and the main themes about miscarriages of justice and finding the guilty at all costs were compelling and interesting to read. I would recommend it, but not if you are particularly adverse to arrogance or ignorance because those characteristics were an irritating theme. less

Not a bad story, keeps the reader guessing. It tugs at the heart strings.

British mystery with too many characters to follow. But a good story!
