review 1: A creepy thriller/mystery. I don't usually read mysteries b/c by the time the end is revealed I can't keep track of everything that makes it all make sense. But this book sounded good and really held my interest in the first half. Then by then end I couldn't keep it straight. There are far too many characters! I gave up trying to keep track. Also I don't find that the descriptions/reviews on back cover are accurate. This is not a book about how a mother deals with a difficult child. The mother is the difficult one who sets off the entire story with her selfishness and ugly treatment of her daughter.

As with most authors these days, book would have benefited from editorial help to tighten the story. Read this for a book group and pretty much everyone agreed it was a fast, involving read--which is why it was a best seller. But we all also thought it would have been better with a tighter, more consistent structure, and with more character development. less
