review 1: I found this book to be amazing! I picked up this book because the cover looked cool and fell in love with it from the first page to the very end. I liked this book so much because of the way that Bodeen portrays the characters in the book. For instance, the father came across like a nerd but as the book went on you saw him transform into a deranged psychopath obsessed by power and the need to become that great minded survivalist. I also loved how it was a easy enough read that could read on the go but, at the same time i found it hard to stop reading. My next praise for the book would be how subtle the clues or pieces of the puzzle actually were like the grandma not being there and the live-stock dying. All-in-all this is one of my favorite books I have ever read and I ho... morepe that others fing this to be true also.
review 2: The title of my young-adult fiction book is called “The Compound” by Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen. In the book it explains how Eli has to get through life by living in the Compound with his mom, dad, and two little sisters. They have been living in it for about 6 years now, because of nuclear wars and explosions that caused them to go underground. The day they were caused to go underground, Eli lost his older brother and his grandma when they were rushing out of the house fiercely. In the story, Eli’s dad is the one that always is in control (since he built the compound). Elis mother is the one that is always quiet and doesn't try to make a big fuss about things that may be a huge deal. Lastly, Elis two little sisters always reminds him about Eddy (the one they lost in the war), how he forgot to tell him to get out of the house and that it is Eli’s fault that Eddy didn't make it with them. Also, they tell him that Eddy was such a great person and he would always give assiduous attempts in everything he does, unlike Eli. The book takes place in Florida, where everyone use to be bustling about their business trying to get to their work. But since the world is destroyed there really isn’t anything left. It use to be palm trees, beautiful oceans and warm temperatures, but not anymore. The major events in my book is when Eli finds out what his father was planning and how they could escape. Eli finds out a lot of secrets about what his father was planning and how they were planning to eat Eli’s siblings as food supplements for Eli, his mother and his father. After, Eli finds out what his father was planning he was furious and thought his dad was a poltroon for what he was thinking. He thinks of ways to escape the Compound from his father with his mother and siblings. After thinking of many ways and strategies Eli knocks his father unconscious and tries to escape. But, he doesn’t know the code to the Compound, he manages to get the door open while his father is still unconscious in the Compound by himself. They find that his father has sent one of his associates to the Compound to discort them to another. Finding there are no problems to the world, they run away from the associate and leave the father in the Compound. After hours of roaming the woods and discovering new things, they find a helicopter above them with Eddy and his grandmother up there shockingly with a search group. They climb up to the helicopter and cry with happiness hugging Eddy and the grandmother. In the book, I think that it was very interesting that Eli could manage to get his family out of the Compound by himself. I also was very interested that Eli’s father had a very cruel way of surviving the Compound, eating people. To me, that is very disgusting, gross and a very defective thought that his father was thinking. What I disliked about the book was that it was very fast forwarding. What I mean by this is that it was going very fast so sometimes you couldn’t really catch up to what's really going on in the story. It was like an event is happening right after each other, to fast and you couldn’t really get a good understanding. For example, in one chapter it was about how Eli’s father was telling him about the supplement plan and the next chapter was about Eli getting to the Compound door trying to escape. Those two chapters were full of thoughts that were going rapidly and some were even confusing. I would definitely recommend this book to someone because it is very thrilling and exciting all the way through and it also keeps your attention. I would recommend this book to a young, understanding reader because throughout the whole book you have to pay attention and see what is happening all the time. With me, I think I should of taken some pauses throughout the book a lot more than I usually would. less

“The Compound” is told by a boy named Eli. He and his family have spent the last 6 years in an underground shelter called the Compound because of a nuclear war. His family in the Compound with him include his mother, father, his older sister Lexie, and younger sister Terese. He has a twin brother named Eddy and a Grandma who are not with the family in the shelter. When it was Eli and Eddy’s 9th birthday, they went camping with their family near the Compound. They were traveling in their RV when Eddy’s allergies flared up and Gram offered to go back to the cabin and get his medicine. Eli had tricked Eddy into sneaking into Gram’s SUV with no one knowing but the two of them. When Gram left, that was when the nuclear war started. Eli’s father drove to the Compound thinking that Eddy was with them. They sealed up the hatch and then noticed that Eddy was not there. The shelter was built by his father, Rex Yanakakis. Rex is a billionaire computer manufacturer and software developer. Eli’s father was worried about the threat of a nuclear war and living in the targeted area of Seattle. Rex was obsessed with the idea of war, had a lot of money, and built the shelter to protect his family when the time came. The Compound had everything that the family needed to survive for 15 years. This is when Eli’s father said it would be safe to come out. The Compound had farm animals, a hydroponic garden, all the food and supplies the family would need, a church, a gym, all the clothes needed as the kids grew up, and computers to do school work. When the story starts, the food supplies are starting to run out because of contamination and maybe sabotage. Eli’s father has found other ways to get food if they need it. “The Supplements” and cloning are the ideas that make Eli wonder if his dad is crazy. Also, Eli thinks his father might be lying by the clues that he finds. He finds newer music cds and a working internet. As Eli starts to uncover the truth, he wonders if anyone would believe him and if there really is a way out.

3 starsI read The Fallout before this one, knowing the ending full well and of Eli`s demons. Even then, I struggle with it. The beginning was too slow. Even though the book picks up at the end, I felt the pace dragged too much until the end –which is the same issue I have with the Fallout. The mother is about to give birth and Eli has to figure out clues to access the code to get help from outside. I think if the clues were a bit clearer –if I had known these nesting dolls that Quinn was pointing at would turn out to be vital or mention of these chemicals for invisible ink- I would have paid more attention to the description/narrative. We see the events from Eli’s point of view and he’s quite a bland, introverted character. That said, what really lifted the book was his growth –there wasn’t much change in him in The Fallout. He starts asking questions and caring for his siblings, when before he wouldn’t even acknowledge them or allow anyone to touch him. The writing is smooth but not extraordinary. It makes an easy read and maybe a second reading, I’ll pay attention to the clues. I’ll look out for more books from the author.

not a bad book at all, pretty easy, though interesting. Suspenseful too, definitely a good read
