review 1: This was an excellent crime novel. I loved almost everything about it from the darkly humorous writing style to the characters and the setting, all elements which are well balanced and interesting. The plot is original and intricate enough to keep the reader guessing, and is also fast paced so there was not a single moment when my interest faded. The characters and their personalities drive the story forward and they all feel convincingly well formed. I would have given this a five but for the dialogue between McRae and Steel. While the relationship works well the dialogue seemed a little overdone to me. It goes way beyond banter to something that would not be out of place in one of the more ridiculous comedy shows - though there are some very funny insults in there.... moreThere are way too many mediocre crime writers out there so I am very happy to have found, at last, a writer on a par with Rankin. I am off to put the rest of Mr Macbride's novels on my wish list.
review 2: Award winning author, Stuart MacBride gives his readers the next adventure of Logan Mac Rae in "Close to the Bone."There are multiple story lines in this complex novel. In one part, a film is being produced in Aberdeen, Scotland. The story is about witchcraft. Someone is imitating the film by murdering people in the same manner as the film. Shortly after the story begins, police find the body of a man who was necklaced. His head was forced into a tire, his arms trapped and then he was set on fire.DS Logan McRae investigates as rival gangs are caught in a gang war where gangsters are beaten and have their knees broken.McRae's superior, DI Steel is a compulsive, wise cracking person whose banter with McRae provide some humor and a change from the gruesome details of some of the crimes. In addition, a gangster, Wee Hamish, is ill and wants McRae to act as his executor of his estate and take over his business interests on his death. One of Hamish's goons wants that job and makes his feelings known by attacking McRae.With a large cast of characters working to solve various crimes, the reader is reminded of the TV show, Hill Street Blues. The descriptions are vivid and MacBride good insight into the characters. His writing is picturesque "But it was her hair that stood out. And up. And in every other direction as if she'd brushed it with an angry cat."The story is lengthy and best read slowly to appreciate the dialogue and Scottish setting. With the number of characters and many nicknames I became confused at times but still enjoyed the story and await Logan McRae's next adventure. less
