review 1: CLOSE TO THE BONE. (2013). Stuart Macbride. ***.This is only the second book by this author I’ve read, the other being the first in this series featuring his police officer protagonist Logan McRae. This is the eighth in the series. What becomes immediately apparent is that there are bunches of prequels to this novel in episodes two through seven. The series has picked up enough followers, however, to continue the author’s capture of bestsellerdom in (at least) Scotland and England. References to earlier events are rife, including what turn out to be key to the current plot. OK…so this not the best example of a stand-alone novel. I found, however, that the author leaned heavily towards character at the expense of plot. We meet – or re-meet – the Aberdeen... more police force. This is a prime example of a dysfunctional crime-fighting unit I have encountered in a long time. There seems to be no lack of crimes on which they should be working, especially the opening example: a man was found dead, the victim of “necklacing.” The style of this killing is gruesome – though used in real life in other parts of the world. Here, the victim has a tire thrust upon him with his head and one arm through the opening. Some accelerant is splashed upon him, and a match used to set him alight. Nasty. On top of this murder, the force under Logan McRae has a few other cases in the bag: a jewel theft, a pair of missing teenagers, and a series of maimings of Asians by hammer blows to the knees and ankles. Their hands are full. What makes it worse is that the city force is driven by in-fighting that pervades the whole organization. When new characters are introduced, you know that they will soon begin contributing their own share of negative energy. The negative energy usually takes the form of rough humor and broad insults among staff members. After a while, I lost the trails of the various plot wrinkles and became overwhelmed with (nit)witting repartee. For fans of Macbride this is likely a satisfying chapter in the adventures of Logan McRae. If you are new to the series, I’m afraid you will be less than impressed.
review 2: Best of the Logan McRae series yet, and that's up against some pretty stiff competition as all these books are amazing. Hilarious, a mad array of weird and wonderful characters and also touching. The police in these books aren't supercops, they're human and they make mistakes, some pretty catastrophic ones too and that makes them much more lovable. Logan is as adorable as ever and Steel is hilarious and jaw-dropping. Incredible books. Can't wait for the next in the series. less
