review 1: The story of The Goodbye Quilt is simple. Linda Davis is driving with her eighteen year old daughter, Molly, as she goes off to college. While sharing the journey, Linda is trying to finish of a quilt that includes remnant of special dresses and outfits that are part of Molly’s life over the years. Linda is a mother who has devoted her life to her husband and daughter, with no career but just what she calls ‘dabbling’ with part time work, some of it at the local fabric shop. What I adored about this book was the close relationship between mother and daughter. Yes, there were times when Molly reacted with a sarcastic or snarky comment, but despite that you could feel how close these two were. It is so lovely to see a positive mother and daughter relationship portrayed ... morein a novel. I found I could associate with Linda but also with Molly and the pressures and attention that comes with being an only child leaving the nest. Their experiences were so real. For me it brought back many memories of when our son and eldest left home and then again, feelings when our daughter left home. I was so emotionally invested in this story. I loved both Linda and Molly. I also loved the positive relationship between Linda and her husband Dan, even though he remains at a bit of a distance, since he does not take the journey with the two women. But he always supports her.The example with the dress that ‘swirls’ reminded me of my daughter's similar reaction to a dress a friend made her at a young age. One quote I liked was when someone said about quilting,'I wish I had time' was this,'What I've found is you make time for the things that matter to you. Everyone has time. It's just a question of deciding what to do with that time' Some of us could say it's like that with reading too. We simply have to make time to read.I absolutely associated with Linda’s feelings about the death of her mother. ’ Even now years later, it’s still hard. There is something about losing your mother that is permanent and inexpressible- a wound that will never heal.’ I knew that exactly and have tears in my eyes even as I write the quote, let alone when I read the book. That was the main thing with this book. These people were real and I associated with them so much, it was impossible for me to read it without smiles and without tears. For those who are into quilting, which I am not but I love reading about it, there is a quilting pattern at the end of the book. I adored this book.
review 2: A shorter book but worth the read for her flowing story, real characters and great story line. Saying goodbye, even under happy circumstances, is difficult for me especially when it means a change in our lifestyle such as this story. Her daughter is going to college far from Wyoming and the mom is going along as her daughter drives. She works on the memory quilt the entire way giving way to memories of her daughter growing up - and now moving away. Nice twists and loving epilogue. less
