Belle Meade Plantation
review 1: An accurate portrayal of the South immediately following the Civil War as the rebuilding begins and the hatred lasts. Olivia takes refuge at Belle Meade Plantation after her brutal husband is dragged through the streets and hung for exploiting his southern investors for gain. Ridley Cooper, a former Yankee soldier solidly against slavery but from South Carolina shows up on the horse breeding farm the same day seeking out a slave he aided during the war and hoping to learn the secrets of the horse trade. If his true status is learned, he will be driven off by the still bitter owner, a former Confederate general who will not trim his beard until the South is free of northern aggression. Both Ridley, never forgiven by his father for the side he chose, and Olivia who must live... more on the generosity of the general and his wife have lost faith in God. It is restored as each experiences the simple faith of the former slaves whose lives were surely worse than theirs. Also, both were led to this place to meet each other. Ridley is charming as he prods Olivia out of her proper ways. She is a little annoying being so modest and prim she will not at first accept his aid in getting out of a wrecked carriage lest he see her undies. But Olivia does change and grow the courage to defy another arranged marriage set up by the general and go her own way.
review 2: To start off, the moderators of my book club met the author at a romance book convention, and the author sent the book club copies to read and review, which I think is pretty awesome of her to do! I probably would not have picked up the book on my own, due to never had heard of the author. Living just about 2 1/2 hours from Nashville, I have visited it many times, and during one visit, I visited and toured the Belle Meade mansion (which besides a few outer buildings, and gardens, is all that is really left of the plantation). Over the years since my visit to Belle Meade, I've often wondered, and dreamed, of what life was like for the Harding family in the plantation's heyday. I adored the fact that the author chose to use the real names of many of the people who lived and worked on this plantation, as well as the plantation owner's real names. The only real "Gone With The Wind" feeling of the book is the post-Civil War time period, what was happening in the South, as well as the views of many people. I was enamored by the story, and couldn't put it down. The plot, characters, setting, and so on, were so well written. Total romance with no sex. I totally fell in love with Ridley. I just loved seeing the love story between Ridley and Olivia play out. I will definitely revisit this book at some point. I will also be recommending others to read this wonderful love story! I think I found another author to add to my favorite authors list! I can't wait to read any other works she's done! less
