review 1: Dirt Gert is a story with lots of good vocabulary and a nice rhythm to it that tells the story of a little girl named Gert who loves dirt and mud. Gert plays in the dirt whenever she can. She even rolls around in it and tastes it! One day Gert was outside playing and it started to rain on her and then all of the sudden she realized that she was growing into a tree. Her friends and neighbors didn't know who she was and thought that her parents should clean her and tell her she couldn't play in the dirt anymore. But, her parents knew exactly what to do and they helped her enhance herself and let her be who she wanted to be and to do what she loved, and that was play in dirt. The theme of this book is individuality and unconditional love and acceptance. I would use this book... more in my classroom by having the kids bring in a brown paper sack with 5 things that will show me and the class what makes them who they are.
review 2: A poem about a girl named Gert who loves to play in the mud and eat dirt for most of her waking hours, and ends up sprouting leaves and roots. The poetry is fun to read aloud and has a nice cadence, but the vocabulary is of the 'hundred dollar'-sort. Nearly every page has words like, 'internalizer,' 'photosynthesized,' 'civilize,' 'burbled,' 'zoologists,' 'ruckus,' and 'wilt.' I think it's awesome to have big and/or fancy words in a silly poem (in fact, it kind of reminds me of Shel Silverstein), but it may not be appropriate for the super-young. Also, some of the images are a bit grotesque, which may also be a consideration for age level. Personally, I thought the grotesqueness was great and visually interesting, but I *am* a grown up, so... less
