The Dark Legacy of Shannara
review 1: It's Terry Brooks. Not much more to say on it. There was a time when his books were new and exciting, but they don't really seem to have evolved much beyond the very first forays into the world of Shannara. I had hoped for a darker edge in this latest trilogy, and in the first book there was little deviance from the norm. I will certainly read on and finish the series, as I do with all his works, I have something of loyalty to Terry Brooks, who gave me so much pleasure from his early works back in the day. I enjoy Shannara, but its just not exactly ground breaking or different. Indeed it feels a bit stuck in time, while the fantasy literary world has evolved Terry has refused to budge. His characters are little different, he has even started rehashing old names which annoy... mores me a little. I would give this book 3.5 stars if possible, but I always round upwards, so it gets a four. Here's to hoping for something more from the series as it continues.
review 2: I started skipping things, like a lot. There are several things I was disappointed in, a few things I liked, but mostly I don't feel anything for this book. It means nothing to me. I have very few feelings and the feelings I do have are meh. Also the beginning of the ending was great, the actual ending sucked. You don't need to make an enticing cliff hanger if it is going to be part of a series, just let it be what it wants to be. It's not necessary ... Trust me. less

Very solid beginning for a trilogy. Good character development, good storyline, and good pacing.
