review 1: Rev. Keller speaks to me on par with Lewis. This book was immensely impactful, and I'm still striving to understand how and why. In his brilliance, Keller chooses in the first section to walk the reader through a very deliberate, painstaking (and never dull) process entailing a progressive, constructed grappling with all of the major philosophies on suffering. Wow. What a unique and unexpected (in form and result) approach: how mysteriously therapeutic and equipping. The ultimate result of this amazing read, for this human who suffers, has been a weightier groundedness, and a fresh level of embrace, true-to-the-core-of-my-heart, in and of the Person Who Is the Biblical approach to suffering. I guess that the brilliance of Keller's approach, for me, is that in looking... more outward and around at what the world has striven to say in answer to pain, then back at Jesus Christ standing next to me, I see in a freshly deeper way how my relationship to Him is everything and all. I lack nothing, and can face anything, because He cares for me. Oh the peace! I unreservedly recommend this book to everyone, whether you suffer or not, because you will, and you love someone who does. After all, the realities of suffering could arguably be considered a collective definition of the human condition. Why remain perplexed in lifelong spiritual uncertainty on the question of Why, when there is clarity, confidence and sufficiency to be had.
review 2: This is classic Keller. Careful. Reasoned. Practical. Principled. The Bible Study on the life of Job would be worth the price of the book if it were the only think in the book. There are parts of Keller's argument that will seem circular to those who are unwilling to enter into Keller's way of thinking, but they are minor and the basic themes of purpose in pain are explored deeply and explained clearly. less
