review 1: I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't. Neither of the protagonists are sympathetic characters. In spite of Julia supposedly being an independent woman, she shows a remarkable lack of backbone. I wanted to smack her. And Harrison is a pompous, chauvinistic ass. Apparently, Harrison is supposed to come to accept Julia's right to make her own decisions, but he really doesn't. These characters were very one dimensional. The plot had an interesting premise, but I just think it was poorly executed. The "witty" dialogue came across as forced. I think she was trying to go for a farce, but she failed miserably. I have read other Victoria Alexander titles and enjoyed them, so this was a bit of a disappointment.
review 2: Another enjoyable regency romance
... more, although it did not go as I thought ti would. The main romance interest starts the book being highly undesirable and not at all what i want to read in a leading man, and although he improved over the pages, I never lost that first impression What I did like was the excerpts from the memoirs, and the story line, and for that reason I will give this one four stars. A beautiful cover of the book completes it. less

Predictable. The preview chapter was better than the rest of the book. Still a pleasant read.
