review 1: he story is set outside London in 1887 and the heart of the story begins when the widowed Delilah is confronted by Sam, the man with whom she had a one-night-stand when visiting New York. Mistaking Samuel Russell for a low level employee of the business partner of her sister’s fiancee, Delilah had assumed she would never see the man again, until he turns up on her sister, Camilla’s doorstep.Sam is a successful American businessman interested in new technology, especially the prospect of mass producing an automobile. Still feeling the sting of his former fiancee who was more interested in his fortune than in him, Sam travels to London for a dual purpose. He is actively seeking investors to mass produce an automobile and plans to attend his good friend, Grayson’s weddi... moreng to his long time love, Camilla. On the other hand, Delilah likes things the way they are and is not particularly interested in progress, especially new technology. In fact, she eschews changes both in technology and in society for the most part. Her goal is to find a wealthy man with a title and remarry. Her brief affair with Grayson when visiting America had been a secret lark for adventure, something she had never done before and never intends to do again. When Sam appears out of the blue, Delilah is flummoxed and pretends they have never met. Sam goes along with the ruse and begins a campaign to win Delilah’s heart. He does have some reservations since Delilah has broadcast her intentions to marry a wealthy peer. His former fiancee had similar ambitions. While Sam is a delightful character, I cannot say the same for Delilah, and therein lies my main problem with this book. Delilah does have reasons for her appearance as a snob adhering to station and societal conventions and they become clear later in the novel. Because of those reasons, I would normally sympathize with her character. However, Delilah continued to be a snob certain in her convictions that she could not be wrong about anything. I just never could bond with her on an emotional level. The plot, setting, dialogue, and description were well done and I enjoyed the budding relationship between Delilah and her sisters, Camilla and Beryl. Unfortunately, my dislike of Delilah overshadowed the other good qualities of the book. I’ve seen so many glowing reviews of this story, but for me, it was not a favorite for me simply because I could not like the heroine. I thought Sam would be better off moving on another woman (like maybe Delilah’s sister, Beryl, who I liked immensely and found far more intriguing and fun).
review 2: Delilah is a young widow who always does what is expected of her. While in America she allows herself an "adventure". She knows that once she returns to England she will never see him again...therefore no one will ever know. Fast forward to her older sister's wedding and who should appear as an invited guest? None other than her "adventure".When Sam meets Dee he knows there is something special between them. They have a fling but he can not forget her. He uses his business partner's wedding as an excuse to see her again. Can a man that is so wrong for you on paper really be your destiny? I loved this story and couldn't put the book down. Another fabulous historical romance by Victoria Alexander. less

Definitely not my favorite Victoria Alexander book. The main character didn't always appeal to me.
