review 1: I listened to this in audio and it was so much fun. The author, Wally Lamb read for it and his voice was such a perfect fit for the story. I loved the characters and the story telling of an 11 year old boy in 1964, with his thoughts, vocabulary, situations and questions. It all felt so fitting. And told just as it would have been, seen through the eyes of Felix. But it also has a bit of an adult tone or humor in its narration. It was great. So funny. A Warm fuzzy holiday story.
review 2: This book was a pure pleasure to read! Yes, I picked up a "Christmas" book at the end of September because I had experienced a significantly unpleasant day, so I needed a fun, light-hearted, witty book to lift my spirits and this was the only un-read novel on my shelf that met
... morethat description. I finished it in two sittings. Felix attends school with the same group of characters we ALL did-- the goody two-shoes, the trouble-maker, the "bad girl". There is the grumpy substitute teacher that no one likes, and the artsy, exotic, intriguing teacher that everyone wishes they had. The antics these characters get themselves into are hilarious; a perfect spoof on all the things that happened to YOU as a pre-adolescent; looking in now, from the outside, makes you realize how much humor you may have missed out on during "the good old days." If you're looking for a novel packed with meaning, or a social commentary to change the world, this is not the book for you-- however, if you wish to turn to reading to lift your spirits, to unwind after a tough day, or as an outlet to help you laugh at all the annoying things that happen in life (in a safe manner, at fictional characters whose feelings won't be hurt--) then THIS book is what you need! less
