review 1: Ten Second Synopsis:Duck makes friends with Death. They spend time together until the inevitable happens.While I'm not entirely sure where the tulip comes into it, this was a truly unique concept for a picture book. What a great little nod to the existential angst that plagues so many! Death is a matter-of-fact little fellow and Duck admirably acknowledges and eventually embraces Death's slightly off-putting presence in her life. The two have interesting conversations on the nature of life and death, and Duck comes to some conclusions, puts to rest some doubts and generally becomes more comfortable with the ever-present company of Death. I found this book both unsettling and strangely comforting, and while I wouldn't really read it to, or with, a child (although there'... mores no reason why you shouldn't) it certainly provided me with some beautiful imagery to ponder over on this brief space of time called Life.Recommended.
review 2: I first read this book several years ago and really liked the tentative approach to death as a subject in a way that is not violent or scary but is with us constantly. I read the book to several classes of 9+ years children and discussed the book at length. While we as adults may see this as a macabre topic children often face life's reality through the death of a beloved pet. The finality of death to a child is not something they can comprehend and discussion in the way of a book like this can help when reality intervenes in our lives. It's subtle colours used in the pictures are comforting despite the subject matter. This book is one to include in any book collection. less
