review 1: "Black Butler: Vol. 1" is a Japanese manga. The story tales the tale of a 12 year old boy living in London named Ciel Phantomhive. Ciel is the new head of the Phantomhive manor. After Ciel's parents were murdered, Ciel wants to find the people who killed them and have revenge. Ciel is so desperate that he is willing to sell his soul to a demon named Sebastian. Sebastian and Ciel's master-demon contract is unknown to the other people that work at Phantomhive manor. This secrecy makes this first volume of Black Butler have an element of suspense and mystery.I really liked this book. I admired how much we learn about Ciel's character in just the first volume. We eventually learn more about Ciel's past as he wears a ring that is passed down through his family. While l... moreooking at the ring, Ciel solemnly states "It has heard the final agony of every family head. When I close my eyes, I can hear their screams". This line made me feel really bad for Ciel and how much he had suffered.I would recommend this book to anyone who likes manga with mystery, suspense, and action. A lot of separate adventures occur in this manga, but the overlying tone of Ciel wanting revenge is made clear.
review 2: I'm not sure about this one. On one hand, I like the premise and Ciel and Sebastian a lot. But on the other hand, I don't like the three supporting characters and I'm a bit 'Hmm' about Ciel being only twelve. I also had a huge 'Huuuuuh? Wut?' moment in the second to last chapter, when Ciel had been kidnapped because he is the "Watchdog of the Queen". Where did that come from? There hasn't been any hint of this before and then, wham, we are thrown into this with no explanation at all.I guess, I'll read part two and then decide if I keep reading this or not. less
