review 1: One of my ongoing themes for my reviews is that I've been mostly undecided as to what I ultimately think about the series. While I still have my doubts, I can say that for the most part I rather like this series overall and Demon Mistress highlights a lot of what I like and dislike about the novels as a whole. What I do like is the continued openness and frankness that Galenorn applies to her characters' love lives. She's not afraid to have a bisexual character and she's not afraid to have Menolly openly like both men and women. There is no "bi today, gay tomorrow" type themes in this book (which is a phrase I absolutely despise, by the way), which is rather liberating at times. I do have to admit that occasionally I would like to see some characters react with less than o... morepen viewpoints. Not because I particularly like biased people but because it would help make things a little more believable. So far we have a mostly fae and supernatural cast of characters, but at times I kind of get irritated that there's very little resistance or guff about the open sexuality of the characters. What tiny bits and pieces we do have come from extreme sources. It'd just help things become a little more well-rounded overall and is something that I couldn't help but notice in this volume. I do have to say that I did occasionally get tired of the constant addition of love interests to each sister's stable. In this case I'm particularly talking about Vanzir. I like him enough as a character, but it just felt a little tacked on and forced that he'd automatically be attracted to one of the characters. It just seems that if you're a character that isn't attached to someone else, you're going to be attracted to one of the sisters and hit on them at one point. The ever growing cast of love interests (one off or otherwise) does get a little old after a while. I honestly felt that the Menolly/Vanzir pairing could have been removed from the book entirely without it really harming anything. That said, the book was overall decent. The narration continues to be something that I love about these books, to the point where I'll probably hold off on reading any of the other books in the series once I reach the end of my library's collection of audiobooks. It just wouldn't be the same experience without it. The story here is good and while it is occasionally slow going, it isn't done to where it really detracts from the overall enjoyment of the book to where I'd try to steer people away from it. I think what ultimately makes these stories are the side characters more so than the main ones. I love Delilah and Menolly, but let's be honest. Iris and Maggie steal whatever scene they're in, as do several others such as new addition Wilbur. I can't help but wish for a spinoff novella or short story that focuses on one of them. I'd recommend this, but it'd probably be more enjoyable if you've loved the series as a whole and don't mind slower moving books.
review 2: Every so often I forget why I stopped reading a series, and grab a book in a series without thinking. That was the case with this book. I forced myself to finish reading the book, but it was a painful experience. Maybe that pain would remind me the next time I see the authors name. One word sums up this book in a nutshell "Crass".Imagine what you would want to be if you could be your own favorite paranormal character, Would you be a dethroned princess? Would you be unbelievably beautiful? Would you dress in the best, drive the best cars? Own a dragon or better yet be the wife of a dragon? Would you be a shape shifter or better yet a double faced shape shifter? Would you be a misunderstood vampire who only Kills the "BAD" guys? Would you look down your nose at all whom differ from YOUR belief structure? Would you be hypocritical, but it would some how be ok because.. (insert justification here)? Would you use vulgar words to express yourself all the while acting shocked when others around you do not treat you as a Lady? Would you have one lover? two? three? all in the same bed as you, but mind you it's all good, because your a princess right? Oh did I forget the best part, you are not just a princess but a fairy princess. This book and its previous book is so full of stuff the cows leave behind. There is no character growth. There is no bonding with our heroines. There is no moral compass, no 'fighting for the cause' The book- the series- is shallow and left me wondering why I did not look for more books when I was at the library. less
