review 1: The author, Ace Atkins, has taken over writing the Spenser mystery novels, and I like his writing better than Robert Parker's. This is a quick read. The plot revolves around a land grab in preparation for a casino coming to the Wonderland race track in Revere. It's has enough plot twists to keep it interesting, and a nice variety of characters. Atkins has Spenser deliver his trademark humor and quick, short-sentence conversations. And don't worry - Atkins includes plenty of information on the what, when, and how of what Spenser cooks.
review 2: What started out as Spenser being hired to out-thug some thugs turned into a compellingly written whodunit of the higest order. This was the second Ace Atkins written Spenser and it is better (just) than Lullaby.
... moreZ fits into the scene more comfortably and what happens to him in Hawk's absence makes the book very personal for both Spenser and the reader. A gruesome story at times, and certainly amongst the best, if not quite right at the top. Certainly worth four stars. less

This is not meeting Parker's standards and I could not finish.

A complicated plot, to my mind, became a who-cares plot.

Fine for what it is. Still makes me miss Robert Parker.

Good, but not as good as the real Parker. 3.5 stars
