review 1: I listened to the audiobook of the first book, which was really fun. This one I actually read. It was still fun, but not as fun as the audiobook. I hear they're going to make a movie out of book 1 though, which is exciting. You also get some details about Aldwyn's past in this one and more about Skylar as well. It is basically just a set up book for the 3rd book though and doesn't really have a conclusion at the end.
review 2: What an awesome sequel to the Familiars!I loved this book! I fell in love with the first one, and the second one was just as awesome!I really liked the idea of animals being the heroes, and another aspect I appreciated in this book was that the animals - Aldwyn, Gilbert, and Skylar - remained the heroes of the story, unlike some others wh
... moreere slowly you start to lose the animal characters, and the human characters start becoming the main focus instead. There were so many plot twists to this book; I could never really correctly predict what was going to happen, and I liked that in this novel because it was done fabulously! I like surprises in plots, if it's done in a great, sensible, and imaginative way, and I thought the Secrets of the Crown certainly pulled it off really well! I thought the story was creative, and all the ideas were written quite well, and I have to say it was an enjoyable read - it was so hard putting it down! What I liked was that the plot kept the reader interested throughout most of the novel, and it gave suspense in the best parts, and overall was the making of a perfect sequel! From my experiences, I find it's rare in books when the sequel is better than the first, but in the Secrets of the Crown, I think it certainly pulled that off. I loved the first book, too, it's just that in the second, you are far more familiar with the characters of the book, and you feel like you know them, so I find it's nicer to read. Once you feel you know the characters, they become almost like friends, and that makes the sequel all the more enjoyable to read. Another thing I thought was nice about this book was that there was a new idea to focus on. Sometimes I find that in sequels, it's the same idea as the first one throughout the book, except it goes deeper, sort of like unravelling a mystery I suppose; when it's the same idea, but you keep exploring it in more depth. In the Secrets of the Crown, it did focus on the same idea as the first primarily, but it also added a new idea which the previous book had said nothing about, and therefore it became more exciting to read, because it's something new to focus on with the same loveable characters. I liked this aspect, and I think that it plays a big role in why I liked it so much.I loved this book as much as the first one, maybe more, and if you're unsure of whether you'd like the series, here are some of my views on whether it's the new series for you!If you like books about magic and adventure, like fun action-fantasy books, where animals are the main focus of the series, I recommend this series to you. That line kind of sounded a little sloppy, so let me put it this way: It's like a blend between the Warriors series and Harry Potter. If you know those two series. If that still didn't really help, it's basically about animals, familiars to be exact, (familiars are like a wizard's magical pet, I suppose. Not really a pet, but more like a companion.) who are the chosen ones to defeat an evil familiar, and restore peace to the queendom. Along the way, there are awesome plot twists, and the three familiars embark on an unforgettable adventure, meeting new friends on the way, and discovering old, buried truths about themselves...There. I hope that helped! (although it still sounded a little sloppy to me :) less
