The Familiars
review 1: This continuation of the story of 3 animal magician's assistants (familiars) is well written, wrapped around a nursery rhyme that animals and humans of their world learn early. The main theme is that there is a familiar (a hare) who has decided to be more - she wants to rule everything. To stop her, we have three not so grandiose familiars - a young cat, a toad, and a jay. Together they travel in a quest to find a way to stop the horrors the hare from taking over. It was well written, but just a tad dry, so I downrated it from a 5 to a 4. Recommended for all middle schoolers and older grade schoolers.
review 2: Not as complicated as, say, Harry Potter, the Familiars series is perfect for the ears and minds of a couple of kids about 7 and 9. The Prophesized Thre
... moree, a telekinetic cat, a puddle-viewing frog and an illusion-generating blue jay, are on a quest to save Vastia. This is book two of the trilogy, and the conclusion will require reading book three. The adventures of the Familiars along their journey are compartmentalized sufficiently by the author to allow some exciting reading at about 30 minutes per night, to kids before bed. less
