review 1: 50 pieces, 50 books, 1 a week. Baricco seems to like the short work; in "The Barbarians" also he assembled the pieces he wrote for an Italian paper. As a consequence there's a lot of disparity in the book, and in this case that is a blessing, because the diversity of the reviewed books is quite impressive: philosophical and historical works, biographies, lots of novels, but also books on tennis and footbal. I only had read 4 of them, so there were a lot of nice discoveries in it. Baricco regularly has interesting comment, but in general I wasn't thrilled. About "the Leopard" by Tomaso di Lampedusa for instance, he is very enthousiastic about the writing style, but he spends no word on the content of this extraordinary novel. A Pity.
review 2: Baricco non mi fa ... moreimpazzire, da quel poco che ho letto, e il suo stile ha molti aspetti che non mi piacciono o non sopporto, come il fare pesante affidamento a singole frasi simile filosofiche e un tono troppo colloquiale, quasi condiscendente. Però è un dato di fatto che molti degli articoli qui raccolti mi hanno fatto venire voglia di leggere i libri di cui parlano. E in alcuni casi mi sono divertita. Chapeau. less
