review 1: Having never read any of Alice Hoffman's books, I grabbed this from the Library shelf as it looked interesting. I was certainly not disappointed! This is such a wonderfully different story - actually two unique stories that end up being intertwined into a creatively done ending. Anything to do with the turn of the century and New York City is intriguing to me. There were definitely some surprises throughout the book that I didn't see coming. The beginning of the book was a bit strange due to the font (italics) but then it all made sense. Definitely give this book a read - you won't regret it!
review 2: I had never read this writer before and was haunted by this book. It is set in NYC in 1911- the two protagonists are a young girl who was raised in a Coney
... moreIsland freak show and a former Orthodox Jew who finds himself investigating the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. You had me at hello. I loved picturing New York City (who is really the central character) still partially farmland but bursting at the seems with development and new immigrants. It is just a very unique story that feels like a twisted and beautiful fairy tale. less
