review 1: One of the messages of this delightful AND disturbing book is that self-centered monsters often not only survive but somehow thrive. With a trail of destruction behind her, Rosa, the terribly unreliable first-person narrator of "The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine," does just fine . . . or almost so, except for a few minor shadows of guilt. The Russian-born young German-language writer Alina Bronsky has created in this novel, an unforgettable character who might remind you, albeit in an exaggerated version, of a few people you have met. I read this novel originally because the English translator, Tim Mohr, is a son of a good friend. While I cannot competently comment on the accuracy of Mohr's translation from German, the English test reads well and does seem to re... moreflect what other reviewers have said about Bronsky's crisp, fast-paced prose. Bronsky is an exciting new voice on the stage of world fiction, and I am eager to read her "Broken Glass Park," which some claim remains her best work.
review 2: Odd, but entertaining. The main character/narrator is super vain and very manipulative--normally my least favorite type of person. But given the tragic/comic series of events, it made her downfall all the sweeter. But she keeps getting back up again, something she finally gets a little credit for. The love/hate cycle adds to the ridiculousness of life in a remote of Russia (and later, Germany) and how one determined woman fights for her own betterment as well as that of her granddaughter. The people in this woman's family put up with her to a point. Seeing their reactions to her through her point of view is telling and adds a great deal to the style. less

Dark humor that seems to go nowhere. Would have been a great short story.
