review 1: I loved the movie. And I loved Jock's art, it's fantastic, amazing, energetic and all around exciting. But the writing in the Losers just isn't as tight as I wanted it to be. It definitely delivers on action, and it's got a lot of laughs. The Losers absolutely is the Die Hard of comics, that's the good news. The bad news is, the story gets so dense that at times it gets absolutely ridiculous. Believe me, I know that action movies (and Diggle, from what I read about these comics, wanted to put an action movie on paper) benefit from ridiculous set pieces and things, but they're also about two hours long. I think five volumes (or in this case, two, since I got the new additions) is way too long. The story would have benefitted from some editing. Mostly, a few snips to the abso... morelutely far fetched ending. The ending is super disappointing because the story is sort of believable. It reflects the current political climate really well, and links a lot of thongs up from America's past, and I really enjoy that kind of thing. I feel like things took too long to get to the ultimate wrap up (which suffered from "way too much exposition" disease, unfortunately) and as a result of that a few more spoilery issues, took a really severe left turn that made the story mean a little less.I did dig on how heartfelt the connections were, but I cringed at how quickly the relationship all the characters had with the one female character turned sour. I understand Aisha's motivations and I can understand why she did what did, but I guess I don't see why she would get close to Clay if she was going to do what she ended up doing.
review 2: I thought this was mostly good, but the villain's ultimate plan seemed a little too over the top, and early James Bond-esque (with the ridiculous villains and their plots to conquer the world). The rest of the book had felt some what down to earth, or at least not over the top, and that didn't fit with me. I did like the villains ultimate motivation, and how while he felt he was doing what was best, he was more than willing to sacrifice as many innocents as necessary. As the series went on, Jock's art started to grow on me. I never quite liked how he did people, but I started to appreciate his layouts. He seemed to use unusual, dynamic layouts that were unexpected, but exciting. Though I still have problems taking seriously someone who goes by the name "Jock".I also liked all the main characters--over the course of the series, they really developed the personalities of the Losers, and they felt like good, realistic characters. less
