review 1: After getting this months ago as part of the Kindle First program, I only recently decided to actually read it. Having based this decision on nothing other than an interesting cover and a short page length, I'm exceptionally satisfied with the novel. As a somewhat jaded, desensitized fan of the horror genre, it's disappointing to find so many interesting concepts that lack in genuine thrills. The Bird Eater does not disappoint. From the very first chapter I found that I was so creeped out that I had to watch something positive before turning in for the night. The story is certainly heavy and bleak, but overall it is wildly engaging.
review 2: I have to say that this book started off creepily enough. The first couple of chapters were wonderful and very, very sp
... moreooky. Then about half way through the book the I stopped getting the shivers and started to get frustrated. Ania did a great job in the beginning, but as soon as she brought in the love story between Aaron and Cheri I lost interest. I started skipping through pages trying to find the scary parts with Birdie, but alas I did not have much luck. Bottom line is what started off as a shrieking ghoul scaring the bejesus out of me became a pretend horror story. I really wished she had developed more of Birdie's story, and shown in explicit detail why he did the things that he did. The one thing that remained with me was Birdie's bloody grin, which was priceless and down right freaky! I was hoping for so much more of that in this book, but was disappointed. It just seemed that Ania lost the tight control of the story that she had locked down in the beginning. I'd recommend it though. She does have a way with words, and I would love to read more of her stuff. less

I've learned the Ania Ahlborn formula, so now I never have to read another of her books. Ever.

2.5 stars. There was potential for a great story, but it lacks depth.
