review 1: The best of the series, I couldn't put it down. If you enjoyed the BBC series, you will enjoy the book even more but don't expect the same plot. The plot was similar but it's a bit like those "spot the difference" games kids do or even it's negative, the same but the opposite. Anyway the book was more engaging, the characters more three dimensional. The ending made the TV series make more sense but it was well written. I don't often give five stars for a detective series book, but I think this one deserved it. I am looking forward to the next one.
review 2: This fourth and final Shetland mystery has a great who-done-it plot, an interesting setting with bird watchers, and still very underdeveloped characters (and this is book 4!) The more mysteries I read, the ... moremore I'm convinced that character development often takes too much of a back seat to the dance of the plot development and concealment, and I feel this is consistently a weakness throughout this series. We still don't get a sense of what goes on in Fran's head. Another triple murder feels too formulaic. The ending feels cheap. But it was a quick and entertaining read. less
