review 1: As you expect, it's well plotted and convincing. When I read a book, one of the things I look for is: Do the characters stay with me afterwards? And Ann Cleeves does female characters well--Nina Backworth is so alive, so warm and so convincing that I could almost travel to the Northeast just to see her in her white silk pyjamas and give her a seeing to. She's not so good on the men--her male characters from Sergeant Joe Ashworth on are little more than cyphers and you feel that the men don't really matter to the writer, but that makes her choice of central character all the wiser. A good read; I recommend it.
review 2: I read some of the author's early books over twenty years ago but can't remember much about them except they featured birds! I recently read a
... morefeature on her which mentioned there was a series set in Shetland so I looked for her name in the library. This book is set in the North East of England and features a female police officer. It's an odd story but I quite liked Vera Stanhope so I will look out for more of this series. less

Really enjoyed this book. Couldn't work out 'who done it' either.
