review 1: This was my review for Kaiwaka Library...Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope's neighbour Joanna disappears from her home, and her husband is concerned enough to ask Vera to take a look and see what she can find. Not an onerous task for her, but as Vera approaches the house where Joanna is staying she hears screams - a body has been discovered. And so begins this tale, which has twists and turns as you'd expect for a detective/murder mystery novel. This is the fifth Vera Stanhope book I've read, and it did not disappoint. It's a good read. This series of books do not need to be read in any particular order.
review 2: I had read one of Ann Cleeves' books set in the Shetland Islands, and was interested in this one featuring detective Vera Stanhope. Vera is quite opi
... morenionated, middle aged, and bulky. She sets out to find a missing neighbor and ends up at Writer's House, which is having workshops for beginning writers who want to be published. Of course some one is murdered and the neighbor ends up with a bloody knife and the plot goes from there. The cast of characters (and suspects) is interesting as is the relationship between Vera and her assistant Joe Ashworth. A good escape mystery. less
