review 1: This is the third book of the Shetland series. Sandy Wilson is home on the Island of Whalsay visiting family. On his way home to his parent's house one night, he decides to visit his grandmother. He finds her lying dead outside of her house. He calls his boss Detective Jimmy Perez who comes to investigate. I really like the characters Ann Cleeves has created in this series and she does a great job of describing the mixed feelings that the characters have about their family members and their neighbours. In the Shetland series books that I have read, the crimes are solved by finding out more about the people, their secrets and their history more than crime scene evidence like fingerprints and forensic information.
review 2: I am really enjoying this series. This
... moreis the third in the series and I am getting used to the author's style. Once again the Shetlands is the setting for a death, but was it an accident or something more sinister, and is it connected to the discovery of an ancient skull in an archaeological dig?I love the way the characters develop. We get to know them in a very everyday way as they go about their lives and without realising it we are drawn in as if we are part of the community. This time we get to know more about the assistant detective, Sandy Wilson. His family dynamics are very different from that of his boss, Jimmy Perez. Sandy wants to do well in his chosen profession but when his own family are surrounded by mystery and intrigue, can he manage to remain impartial while trying to sort out the clues? And as for Jimmy, is his future about to change?I love the descriptions of life on the small island, the need for travel between the islands on a ferry, and the subtle battles between the traditional way of life and the modern world bringing more changes to the lives of the inhabitants. The book is described as a thriller. I question that description. I don't feel there is a thrilling scene in the whole book. Instead, it is a very satisfying read about people you start to care about. And when the book ends, there is still the feeling of wanting to know what happens to the people as they move on in their lives. less
