review 1: This was a wonderfully relaxing read, which perhaps shouldn't be the case for a detective novel. Truth to tell neither the victims, nor their partners and friends, were likeable in any way - in fact, they were all pretty one-dimensional. By far the most interesting characters were the three police officers, especially Jimmy Perez. His ongoing struggle to come to terms with his grief was the reason I kept reading.
review 2: Wavering between 3 and 4 stars but the sense of place is what tips the balance for me. This one is mainly set on Unst, so a long way north involving extra distance even from Lerwick. A few details didn't quite gel (the mysterious Monica seemed to appear rather late on and then be not quite as iportant as she seemed) but otherwise this has a
... more nice mix of modern and traditional elements (including what seems to be a ghost story). I am not sure that I would feel safe attending any traditional Shetland party - this is not the first in these books to end in tragedy! The loss of Jimmy Perez's fiancee Fran in a previous book casts a dark shadow, still think I would have preferred that not to happen. less

Another super book in the Shetland series. Jimmy Perez is a great character and easy to believe in.

Love this series! I did sorta guess whodunit but who cares - the story was well done.

A well spun tale in the middle of the Shetlands.
