review 1: This was a wonderfully relaxing read,which perhaps shouldn't be the case for a detective novel. Truth to tell neither the victims, nor their partners and friends, were likeable in any way - in fact, they were all pretty one-dimensional. By far the most interesting characters were the three police officers, especially Jimmy Perez. His ongoing struggle to come to terms with his grief was the reason I kept reading.
review 2: Wavering between 3 and 4 stars but the sense of place is what tips the balance for me. This one is mainly set on Unst, so a long way north involving extra distance even from Lerwick. A few details didn't quite gel (the mysterious Monica seemed to appear rather late on and then be not quite as iportant as she seemed) but otherwise this has a... more nice mix of modern and traditional elements (including what seems to be a ghost story). I am not sure that I would feel safe attending any traditional Shetland party - this is not the first in these books to end in tragedy! The loss of Jimmy Perez's fiancee Fran in a previous book casts a dark shadow, still think I would have preferred that not to happen. less
