review 1: I really liked the first Shetland book, but this one was difficult to read. It didn't flow smoothly or engage me in anyway. The timeline (that's not quite the word I'm looking for) constantly changed, often flitting several times in one paragraph so that I wasn't ever sure which day or year was being talked about. Conversations were start/stop, almost every line being interrupted by scattered thoughts. If this was done on purpose, to create atmosphere or whatnot, then that purpose went right over my head. Maybe I was reading too late at night. ") I also found the romance and Taylor's nervousness distracting. There really wasn't anyone to root for or be sympathetic with. Despite all of this, I'm eager to read the next in the series and I'm keeping my fingers crossed... more that the TV series comes to the US soon, is awesome, and doesn't include litter language.
review 2: That's a good one. Straightforwardly told mystery, sympathetic characters, awesome setting and a big riddle of a story that is only untangled within the last two or three pages. I liked it a lot, especially its clear-cut and unfussy tone, and have been tempted to give it even four stars, but then compared it to some of Louise Penny's novels or Susan Hill's latest and opted for only three. Nontheless a pleasure and a must for anyone travelling far north. less
