review 1: Really enjoyed this one in the series! Loved seeing Cam succumb to tha tricky emotion Love! I really liked Pen, she was a perfect counterpoint to Cam to get him to lighten up and see things in a different light. It was interesting that, unlike in the previous two books, there was another love story laying out in the background concerning Pen's younger brother and the sister of one of Cam's business/political rivals. There was a lot happening in the book which kept you glued to the page from start to finish. A great story and I hope we get to see more of these characters as I really liked them.
review 2: I think I would have rated this book higher if it were not for Harry and Sophie. It went on for too long and it wasn't that relevant when it came down to it. It
... more could have been established in a few pages. I didn't want to read about young love to establish that they truly mean it. Even after all those descriptions, they still seem impulsive. None of the declarations really convinced me otherwise. Sadly, this seems more indicative of her loose writing, which shows in other aspects of the novel. Her protestations seem too drawn out. The hero is wishy washy about whether he wants love. There is no build up to his change of mind. Despite having good moments, it was overpowered by the seemingly careless way they were put together. I liked that Camden proposed to her very early on. I liked that she had a life outside of him. For a supposedly adventurous woman, she was pretty tame. She kept a large part of herself empty for him.Years ago, Camden proposed to her with an eye to having an amicable marriage since she was his friend. Unbeknownst to him, she was in love with him. Unfortunately for her, he abhors the idea of love. He associates it with recklessness and selfishness. His evidence, her parents and his parents. She runs away to the continent to escape her mother's pressure to marry a duke. While she was away, she amassed quite the slutty reputation. Camden bought into it and judged her wrongly. He stewed over his hurt pride and it took him nine years to think about marriage again. They reunited when her brother tasked Cam of finding her and bringing her back to England. Along the way, he saved her twice, first with the thugs and second with the shipwreck. They danced around their physical attraction but decided it is better to be apart. However, they get caught in a potential scandal and are forced to marry to save the good name. She felt guilty that he gave up the proper duchess to marry her. Therefore, she sought to be what he wanted. However, what the reality of what he wanted wasn't living up to his expectations. He found himself wanting his old lively friend instead of the prim and proper duchess. He realizes this when she defended him against gossipy women. He was entranced by her passion and he slowly realizes he really needs her in his life. This is my favourite part of the novel. The part where he was discomfited to find that he took her liveliness for granted. He only realized it when she was absolutely dull and he hated it. However, it didn't really become amazing because the conflicts seem contrived. Somehow, they just didn't flow. The story moved according to his revelations and I think it did a lot of disservice to Penelope, whose life revolved and stopped according to Camden. I felt like she had no life outside of her love for him, which I found to be quite sad. The thing I absolutely hated in this book is Harry and Sophie's story. It disrupted Cam and Pen's story. These are pages where their story could have been better developed. However, judging from the contrived conflict of Cam being melodramatic and Pen being empty of life outside of her love for Cam, I have my doubts. Anyways, Harry and Sophie's story just disrupted the flow of the story. It was the same story too. They always proclaimed their love for each other over and over again and I didn't believe it. They attempted to run to America when a simple no at the altar could have sufficed. It was beyond annoying and unnecessary. less
