review 1: This book turned out to be a lot better than I thought it was going to be. The main character, Caro, was such a spoiled little brat that I wanted to yank her out of the book and slap her profusely. And then, I felt like the book kinda dragged through a lot of nonsense before it finally got to the point of the story: why Caro's sister went to live in a convent and what was so wrong with her afterwards. However, once the book finally started getting down to the nitty-gritty I couldn't put it down. Caro's character development seemed flawless, and what I thought was going to be just another cheesy teen drama turned out to be a lot deeper than I thought. I loved reading what Father Bob had to say, and it made me think a lot about my own spirituality and how I perceive things.... more I love it when books allow me to reflect on my own life; I feel like whatever the author was trying to accomplish worked with me.So, I give this book a 4, docking a point because of the way it started, but I was pleasantly satisfied with the way it ended. Can't wait to read All Quiet Things!
review 2: I had to dnf this book, or otherwise I would lost that fight against my yawning and eyes falling shut. Yeah, the novel made that much of an impression on me.The main reason why I'm giving up are the characters, an not because they're unlikable but because I just don't give a shit about them. The MC, her parents, her friends - they're each described in a neat little paragraph like you might find it in a children's book. The author obviously has never heard of the concept of showing instead of telling. In terms of characterization, she honestly couldn't have done worse.Added to that, the plot is basically non-existent. It seems like the action is just going on on the side, while the focus is actually on the MC's family drama, and that would have worked perfectly if the characters had been portrayed differently and their personalities had been more complex and authentic. And without an interesting plot and characters I couldn’t bring myself to care about, well, I basically had no choice but give it up after only 120 pages. I honestly expected more from this highly promising blurb & reviews. less
