Christmas Stories
review 1: This was a fun cozy Christmas book to read. Short and sweet and touching. A story of an unlikely friendship formed between two young girls who might've never met if it weren't for a mysterious death and a lost but beloved donkey. The story is well written makes you feel like you were there right at street level, freezing cold, although being in the middle of a Canadian winter it's not hard to imagine such cold. I didn't know the Gracie in the book was Gracie the main from the Pitt stories. I haven't read all of those but Gracie has made her appearance in the most recent one I read and now I'm happy that I read some background in her life.
review 2: It is three days before Christmas and 13 year old Gracie Phipps meets eight year old, Minnie Maud Mudway who
... moreis searching for her uncle's lost donkey. Both girls live in poverty in Victorian London and speak with a cockney dialect. Minnie's Uncle Alf, a rag and bone man has been killed and his cart and donkey have disappeared. With the help of shop owner Mr. Balthasar (a Christmas wiseman?) the mystery is solved. I previously read A Christmas Journey and enjoyed it. I felt this book is a real stretch to call it a Christmas book. It does wrap up on Christmas Eve at a living reenactment of the Nativity, but that is the only tie in with Christmas. The cockney dialect was challenging, but rewarding to figure out, but I also found it annoying and unnecessary. less

I love these Christmas "escapes"! So gentle and relaxing! I look forward to each year's addition.

This was difficult to read as the cockney accent got old in a hurry! VEry predictable.

The most awful book I have ever had the misfortune to read.
