review 1: I came across this book I think because I read somewhere that Malcolm Gladwell recommended it. I was immediately struck by a comparison made in the beginning of the medical industry to the airline industry - because I had listened to a podcast on NPR that made a similar comparison about the complexity of the two industries and how the airline industry has a goal of zero fatalities, but fatalities in the medical field are commonplace. Gawande draws on his experience as a surgeon but gives real-life examples of how simple checklists can save lives, making sure every step is done to prevent error. I liked how the book can be applied to other industries. I classified this book under "business" but it is a mixture of narrative, discussion, examples, and applica... moretion.
review 2: I surprisingly found out about this book from a Rivers Cuomo AMA. Maybe he created a checklist for rocking out? There are a lot of great tips in this book between the surgeon and pilot war stories. The big takeaway I had is that a checklist gets the dumb stuff out of the way so that you can focus on the important stuff. Every industry has checklists too. I’ve extended an acronym checklist for camera operators. FocusApertureShutter TachometerFrame rateLevelISOColor (white balance)I think it’s worth reading this book if you’re motivated enough to make a new checklist after completing the book. less

Here's the thing about reading a book written by a doctor: They have no problem bring up the sorts of things that make a normal person a bit uneasy. Like open chest surgery on a 5 year old. It's not that it was graphic, it's just when you start to visualize it, you feel unsettled.Maybe it's just me. I also avoid all ER and crime investigation shows for this reason. That said, Gawande makes a solid case as to why you should be using checklists in your daily life. It's not a guide to doing it, but a manifesto as to why it's important. You probably think you use checklists well, but I have my doubts.
