Fox and Hen
review 1: Basic Plot: Fox and hen have no food, so hen goes off to get some and has an adventure. The first thing my son said as we opened this book together was, "Where are the words?" He was a bit confused, as this is a picture book in its purest sense. The story plays out solely in picture form, so the reader has to interpret the pictures and their meaning to get the story. Not an easy task for an autistic child. However, the art was done well and the story clear so he was able to follow it with a little prompting from me. There were a lot of funny facial expressions on the animals, and there was a funny twist to the ending.Might I also add that it was more than a little refreshing to see the female (hen) leave the egg with the fox (male) at home and go off to do the necessar... morey adventuring instead of the other way around? Yes, I think I might.
review 2: In this energetic, wordless picture book, Rodriguez manages to create an action-packed story about a very adventurous hen. Most of the wordless picture books I've read are gentle and sweet. That is not the case here. Sea monsters, birds with sharp teeth, and other fantastical adventures await when hen leaves fox to babysit her egg while she goes fishing. Wordless picture books can be excellent for teaching children how to imagine and tell their own stories. This one, due to its bright colors and heavy action, will be more appealing to kids and offer more opportunities for exhuberant narration. less
