review 1: I chose this book as I had read and enjoyed Rubbernecker. However I didn't find this earlier book of Bauer's to be as good or engrossing. This is the story of a boy communicating with the child killer who it is believed killed the boy's uncle as a young boy, in an attempt to find out where his uncle's body was buried. The parts of the book focusing on the boy seem like a book written for older children, although the other parts which include some of the killings suggest this is meant for an older audience. The book is quite light and quick to read (as was Rubbernecker)and I think it is a shame that the characters were not developed more fully and more suspense built through the book. There is also a rather awkward chapter slotted in towards the end.

... more book of two halves. The first part had much to recommend it. However the second half was disappointing and lacked credibility. Until the point of Avery's prison break out I was quite absorbed by the correspondence between SL and AA but after his escape from prison the whole plot just seemed to disintegrate and the characters lost depth. As the reader I cared less and less as the overly inevitable events unfolded. less

Really enjoyed this book, a very good read and an unusual story typical of this author.
