review 1: Well, Bauer easily gets the award for Best Trilogy-That-Nobody-Knew-Was-A-Trilogy (okay, maybe SOME people knew, I sure as hell didn't - I like the way the three books were linked without being dependent on each other or being all cliff-hanger-ish). I haven't read anything by her that hasn't been really good, but honestly, this seemed brilliant to me - it's a mystery, but there is so much other great stuff here: relationships between siblings and between children and parents, two great police characters who are not heroic or perfect in the least but are extremely well-written characters, a sweet and real first love story, and a villain who is more sad than frightening. There's also a wonderful sense of place. It's a really well-written novel that just happens to be a mys... moretery.
review 2: Children and an adult disappear, leaving behind nothing but a post-it with a message on it. Who took them, where are they, are they still alive. The police has hardly any clues to go with and they don't seem to advance. There is doubt that the only adult that has disappeared, a policeman just back from a year leave after his wife was murdered, is involved in the kidnapping. Is Jonas a victim or a criminal? One of the kidnapped teenagers is convinced he is a killer. less
