review 1: With every new book or story that I read by Blake Crouch, he keeps climbing up the charts of my list of favorite authors. This collection of 10 short stories is definitely worth reading. The only clunker in the group may be "The Newton Boys' Last Photograph", just because it's only 25 words long. However, the poem the story originates from is included in Crouch's introduction to the story and it is quite good.
review 2: A collection of short stories in the terror/thriller category - reminiscent of Stephen King, but without the gore - except in a few cases. My favorite was the last one, "The Pain of Others," with the focus on a female thief, who - in the course of a robbery - overhears a hitman and his client discussing the planned killing of the client's wif... moree. Displaying a rare selflessness, the thief decides to try to stop it - with some unexpected results. The stories vary in theme and quality of execution, but for fans of this genre, are worth reading overall. less
