review 1: A decent follow up to the first volume of Mighty Avengers, but not really as good.Okay, first the good: The series continues to be incredibly colorful (in characters, in events, in visuals). Doom get's to shine as a villain and there are some great moments between him and Iron man where the juxtaposition of their two characters, who are so similar yet so different, really play out well. Senty's nuttiness gets to really shine. I'm not sure why, but I have REALLY enjoyed him as a character and the way he has been slipped into the Marvel stuff from this era. Above all the art is probably the best thing about this volume. It's not just that the art is teller on almost every page, it's the way they use changes in art to help you feel the change in mood and plot. the art w... morehen Morgan Le Fey in on screen is dark and moody and painted, making it feel like it's in the Dark Ages. When they travel in time to the not too distant past the art is made to appear as it's from a comic made then. Not just the coloring helps add to this, butt he little marvel adds on the bottom of the page were an amazing little touch.Okay, so now the bad: Ms Marvel is one of my favorite Super heroes ever, but I left this book feeling like she has rarely been so badly written. Stark's constant overriding her as team leader goes from showing how hands on he is a leader and how much of a douche he can be to beating a dead horse with a stick. It really felt that Carol should having been pushing back against him more, and the fact she didn't was really noticeable, at least to me as someone who is familiar with her. Second, Dooms pretty foul talking down to her was a little too much. The first time he calls her a "cow" and tells her that no one will care if she dies was fine, it shows what kind of villain Doom is and how little he thinks of women. But a page or two later when he reiterates all of that but even more vulgarly, including mentioning her weight, and Carol Danvers simply responds with the thought bubble "that actually hurt my feelings" felt way more like "perhaps this writer is himself a misogynist and doesn't like to write female characters" instead of "Doom is a misogynistic a-hole and doesn't like women". Carols response, in meekly thinking "ouch my feelings" and nothing more seemed to reinforce the feeling that what Doom was saying was coming more from the writer, as well as being totally out of character for her. My other complaint is that the build up to Secret Invasion via Tony Starks paranoia seemed really badly handled here. What it felt like was this comic was done and ready for print and they just went in whenever there was space and added an extra thought bubble of tony thinking "oh no, is they a skrull?" So yeah, that was all pretty forced. I'm hoping the skrull thing is handled much better during the next two volumes.
review 2: Another good Avengers tale. The story moves nicely and the art is great, though the painted pages with Morgana Le Fey are a little jarring. I guess it was a device to remind us that she's still in ancient times, but when the next page is pencil drawn, it stops the flow. This Avengers team (Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Wonder Man, Sentry, Black Widow, Ares, Wasp) has a good mix of powers and attitudes, though it could use more comic relief (we need a Beast or a Hawkeye now and then). There are some nice two-page battle spreads, though Bendis still avoids any fight that lasts more than a page or two, much to my annoyance. A good example is that the "Venom Bomb" itself is only used in the first issue of this collection--the rest of the book deals with the fallout. It's hard to get too worked up about an attack that was resloved in four pages or so, if you ask me.Still, fun stuff and I'd read the next one. less

Some great fight scenes but overall, go to a real Avengers series.
