review 1: I reread Volume 1 right before reading this because it has been a while since I checked out Miles Morales' storyline. I forgot how young he is. Only 13 years old. That's crazy. It is fun watching Miles as he is slowly growing into a hero. He has a hero’s heart, but he is still gaining the skills. I find him to be a very likable character with an engaging cast.In this volume, the story slows down a little bit, but it is still a fun read.(Spoilers) When I read Volume 1, I didn’t pick up on where things would go with his uncle. I wasn’t sure if he appeared as a villain for the Ultimate Peter Parker, so I didn’t know how serious to take him as a bad guy. The beginning of this volume made me think that Prowler might become an anti-hero, or even a partner for Mil... morees, because of the way he talked to Scorpion. It soon became clear that Uncle Aaron planned to use Miles’ new powers for his own gain. The appearance of Omega Red was unexpected since I know him as an X-Men villain in the 616.I was also surprised that some of Peter’s cast is becoming important to Miles’ storyline. I read this volume right after reading volume 1, and it was a good experience to read the whole story (so far) straight through.
review 2: A decent follow-up to a really strong beginning. I really like Miles as a character and the wrinkle of his uncle being the Prowler (one of the most under-used great characters in Marvel) is a fun twist. We also have some nice moments of Miles still learning his powers and running against the legacy of the original Spider-man. I hope at some point his story moves past that and he builds his own Rogues Gallery of villains, otherwise I fear the series will owe too much to the original. But we'll see....I'll keep reading (and hopefully enjoying) for now. less
