review 1: This was an excellent read about the history of the last Tsar of Russia and his family. I can remember stories of people claiming to be Anastasia after she supposedly escaped being murdered with her family and it was nice to read what really happened. I learned a lot about this time period from this Young Adult book without getting bogged down in a thick, long-winded adult version. It covered what was going on politically and with the peasants as well. It was fascinating and I couldn't wait to pick it up each night to read. I haven't read too many books about Russian history, but so far it seems to me that there isn't an ounce of happiness to be found in the past in that country.
review 2: A great read (listen)! Basically all I know about this era of Russian hi
... morestory is, humiliatingly enough, from the animated movie Anastasia, so I spent the whole book being like, but where's the talking bat??? j/k. I mean for real there's no talking bat in this book, but it's a very compelling historical narrative with great use of primary source documents. I liked that the audio version had other readers for the letters and journals. It kinda spiced things up. It's also a great combination of humanizing the Romanov family and understanding how and why they were so cut off from the world, but also of how desperate the peasants were.also MURDER. less

So fascinating and explained in a clear, concise manner. Tragic story of the Romanov family.
