review 2: 4/5 What an exciting read! Also.. I just found out that there's going to be a fourth book! I seriously hope Carlos Ruiz Zafón is writing it right now. I need it in my life. I need answers to my questions!Initial Thoughts:1. As usual, amazing characterisation through
... moreout! The way that Carlos Ruiz Zafón develops these throughout the series is magnificent and I really connect with them because of their complexities. This book mainly deals with Fermín as a character, who was intriguing throughout. 2. Such a beautiful writing style. I feel like Zafón completely captures the emotions of the characters and also creates amazing imagery and symbolism which is great to think about from a more analytical point of view. 3. Though not as sinister as the previous two books, the plot was still Gothic and mysterious - some of my questions were answered and some new sub-plots were introduced which then created even more questions, which is why I want to read the fourth book right now! The mystery really captured my attention throughout and even after finishing it, I'm still thinking about certain possibilities.4. I loved the historical references to the Spanish Civil War and Francoist Spain, an era which is so fascinating to explore in literature. And even though these references were prevalent throughout the book, they never felt forced or contrived - I never felt like I was reading a history text book because everything mentioned helped to shape my contextual understanding of the plot.5. In comparison to The Shadow of the Wind and The Angel's Game, this didn't have the same magical 'spark' that really wowed me and at times felt slightly rushed, something which I haven't really seen before from Zafón. I almost feel like it took a bit of a different approach in terms of answering/wrapping-up stuff from the first two books and setting things up for book four which sounds like it will be an amazing book! less
