review 1: This book didn't "catch" me at all. I almost put it down several times, but I kept thinking it would get better. It was recommended to me, so I felt compelled to read it, but in my opinion, don't waste your time. We start off meeting a man named Galen and his teenage apprentice Raffi. They are relic seekers, but exactly what are relics I never could figure out which was frustration no. 1. We soon learn that Galen has lost his ability to do whatever it is he should be able to do - magic? - Frustration no. 2, though that is more his than mine. Because of this, the tension builds between he and his young apprentice who, if you think about it, would probably find it pretty difficult to learn from someone who no longer has the ability to do the things he expects his apprentice ... moreto learn and do? They find themselves on a quest to find someone who has stolen something from someone else and to find someone who will help them get Galen's powers back; while on their journey, they are being hunted by "The Watch" who are sworn to capture all relic seekers. They meet Carys who ends up being one of the Watch enlisted to hunt them down, but then she learns of their true nature and power, and though sworn and determined to capture and turn them in at the end, finds herself battling her own inner conflicts about what is real and what true power is.
review 2: The Dark City by Catherine Fisher takes you to the planet called Anara, which is corrupted with chaos, where Relic Master Galen Harn and His Apprentice Raffi are on their way to a supposed finding of a relic, as they become more involved things become complicated and they must set out on a journey to Tasceron the most corrupt and dark city. What will their future hold in store for them? I really enjoyed the book because it had a great plot and characters, with a good backstory and was very uniquely written. It's only flaw was that it could become predictable at times and you knew what was going to happen. Overall it was a good book that you should definitely read. less
