review 1: What a compelling story of absolutely unconditional love from a man with no family connection - just someone who saves a young life and never looks back. The world would be a better place of there were more Nathan's regardless of how obstinate, how rebellious, how unruly a young person can become. This is a great story of how that love can make a difference even if that difference is not noticeably detected early on. Persistence does indeed pay off.
review 2: I loved this book. It is minimalist as another reviewer said. The story took unexpected and often pathetic twists and turns but it is a reminder of life. I would have loved a happy perfect story but that is not this story. I am not sure how Nathan could have done better by Nat and Nat's grandmother needed
... more help herself. There are a lot of what ifs in the book. I did cry at the end and when I finished the book it left me thinking. Highly recommend. less

Strong characterizations. Brought out emotion in me. Could do without pugilism.
